I always find the time between seasons challenging, I am never sure what to wear or whether to leave the house because we still don’t know what the weather is doing. I yearn for lighter days and await the first signs of spring and focus my attention on things that are uplifting and motivates me to come out of hibernation mode. One of the ways I overcome the indecision of this time period is to refresh my home and wardrobe which definitely lifts my mood and makes me excited for the year ahead and I may or may not do a dance around the house praying for sunshine as I declutter 😉

I have picked some of my favourite items from Matalan’s newest collections to give my wardrobe and home a new lease of life. And I am sharing some of my top tips on how to refresh your spaces affordably without having to compromise on quality.

Create and style a cosy corner

The first thing I like to focus on is making my home feeling bright and airy, so I switch out any darker cushions and textiles for lighter ones. This is quite common and a fairly standard thing to do in Scandinavia and I think it is picking up pace here in the UK. Create a cosy nook by styling a chair and adding the cosiest of cushions. Appeal to the senses with these luxe velour and Mongolian faux fur cushions. And stick to similar tones and hues to pull off a sophisticated interior scheme.

I love the texture of the velour cushion

Add Greenery

Indoor plants whether they are faux or real are good for the soul and should have a place in every room in the house. I took the opportunity to add some faux ones because I managed to kill some of my real ones over winter. And if like me you struggle to keep plants alive, go for the faux maidenhair plant in this stylish metallic plant pot. I love the pop of colour with the pink strip that wraps around the pot.

The metallic colour block planter is dreamy

Dress your window cills

When styling your home consider forgotten spaces like window cills. Treat them in the same way as you would a shelf and add your favourite books, trinkets or plants and a styling tip: embrace odd numbers. As a general rule of thumb, groups of 3 or 5 work best. Try adding a trio of objects in different shapes and sizes and don’t be afraid to be bold and have a mix of patterns, the ceramic glazed plant pot looks great with the spot print planter  here.

Don’t be afraid mix patterns, I adore the spot aloe vera plant pot

Declutter, declutter, declutter

We have a really busy household with our three little ladies, so baskets are our best friends and help us keep on top of our day to day clutter. And when they are as beautifully embellished with tassel fringing and pom poms like these ones, it’s hard to resist.

The tassel fringing adds a stylish detail to the humble basket

Lighting

We never use the main lights in our home, we always use floor and table lamps. The smoked glass shade and marble base adds a luxurious feel to the room as well as a hint of metallic gold which adds warmth.

Low level and ambient lighting is one of the most important elements to focus on in your home. Good lighting can transform the feel of a room and create a welcoming space especially when styling cosy nooks in your house which otherwise may have been neglected. Choose a lamp that has a mix of materials and will warm the space like this smoked glass table lamp.

Sweet dreams

My trio of little ladies are 8, 5 and 4 so they also want in on the action so I took the time to refresh their home and wardrobes. If I ever have an opportunity to dress them all in the same outfit I am on it! I think they look adorable in their matching denim boiler suits and leopard print headbands

Liven up a neutral colour scheme with patterned bedding

And if you want an instant refresh for a room which requires a lot less time than redecorating add a new duvet cover. A printed duvet cover especially will brighten up a space. I am really drawn to aztec and ethnic prints and love that this duvet cover is reversible. And don’t forget to dress your bed in the same way you would layer your clothes this spring and add a cosy blanket at the end of the bed.

Last but not least I picked my favorite outfit to see me through to sunnier days. The jumper is super cosy as it’s fleece lined and I teamed with a lightweight khaki parka. And I guess from my home edit above it comes as no surprise that I love beige and the trainers compliment the rest of the look.

I have linked my outfit and the rest of my edit below if you would like to shop my look. What was your favourite item? Leave me a comment below.
